Compilation – Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye: A Tribute To Roky Erickson – Cassette

Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson is a compilation album released in 1990, paying homage to the influential American musician Roky Erickson. The album features covers of Erickson’s songs performed by various artists from different genres.

Roky Erickson, known for his work as the frontman of the 13th Floor Elevators, is considered one of the pioneers of psychedelic rock and a significant figure in the development of the garage rock and punk rock genres. His music often delves into themes of horror, science fiction, and mental illness, creating a unique and captivating musical style.

Roky Erickson often seems to be better known in rock circles for his well publicized psychological maladies and his less-than-gentle treatment at the hands of Texas’ judicial system than for his music. While Roky’s habit of informing anyone who asks that he’s a Martian or is in contact with Satan makes for good fanzine copy, the best reason to be interested in Erickson is his songwriting.

There’s a graceful, vivid surrealism to his lyrical style that’s endured far better than most of the noodlers who came out of the psychedelic rock movement. His is later bursts of horror film fancy conjure up a troubling tension that’s laughed at only by the shallow or ignorant.

When Erickson’s legal problems came to a head in the late 1980s, longtime fan and Sire Records executive Bill Bentley assembled Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson to raise money for Erickson, as well as drawing attention to the unique beauty of his music.

“Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye” features an eclectic roster of artists who admired and were influenced by Roky Erickson’s music. The album showcases a range of interpretations of Erickson’s songs, with artists bringing their own styles and interpretations to the table.

Notable artists featured on the compilation include R.E.M., ZZ Top, T-Bone Burnett, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Julian Cope, and Primal Scream, among others. Each artist puts their own spin on Erickson’s material, resulting in a diverse collection of covers that celebrate his songwriting and musical legacy.

The album includes renditions of Erickson’s songs such as “If You Have Ghosts,” “Two-Headed Dog,” “Night of the Vampire,” and “Starry Eyes,” among others. These covers capture the essence of Erickson’s haunting and psychedelic sound while allowing the contributing artists to showcase their unique styles.

“Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson” serves as a testament to Roky Erickson’s influence on the music industry and his enduring legacy. It highlights his songwriting prowess and the impact his music had on a wide range of artists across different genres.

For fans of Roky Erickson or those interested in exploring the work of artists who were inspired by him, this tribute compilation offers a captivating and diverse musical experience.
