Live Skull – Dusted – Cassette

Dusted is the second studio album by the American post-punk band Live Skull, released in 1987. The album showcases Live Skull’s distinctive blend of noise rock, punk, and experimental elements, delivering a raw and gritty sonic experience.

Of the three official albums this New York art rock group produced, Dusted is the less straightforward and most compelling document. Blending the bleak desperation of Joy Division and the seductive complexity of ’80s Sonic Youth. Their better works were anchored by an exuberant young vocalist, Thalia Zedek, whose later work with Come could righteously claim her the trophy of best American blues singer of the ’90s.

With Dusted, Live Skull further developed their signature sound, characterized by jagged guitar riffs, dissonant melodies, and intense, brooding atmospheres. The album’s production, handled by Martin Bisi, captures the band’s raw energy and adds to the overall abrasive and chaotic nature of their music.

The album’s lyrics delve into themes of alienation, societal decay, and personal introspection, reflecting the gritty and urban landscapes of New York City, where the band originated. Vocalist Thalia Zedek’s haunting and intense vocals add an additional layer of emotional depth to the songs, complementing the band’s dark and edgy musical style.

Notable tracks from “Dusted” include the opener “Five Revelations,” the relentless “No Law,” and the hypnotic “Black Horse.” These songs showcase Live Skull’s ability to create a dissonant and intense sonic experience while maintaining a sense of cohesion and structure.

Dusted is a significant album in the noise rock and post-punk genres, exemplifying Live Skull’s unique approach to music and their willingness to experiment with unconventional sounds and structures. The album remains an influential and captivating release, reflecting the band’s raw power and their contribution to the alternative music scene of the late 1980s.

After the achievements of their peers Sonic Youth and the Swans, Live Skull’s name remained more often a footnote in the biographies of the better-known avant-rock groups. Fans of the ’80s New York post-punk shouldn’t miss out on this highly accomplished album, considered by many to be their best.
