The Cure – The Peel Sessions – Cassette

The Cure’s performances on the John Peel Sessions are a significant part of their early career, capturing the band at pivotal moments during their evolution from post-punk to the gothic rock sound they became famous for. The Cure recorded several sessions with John Peel, the legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ known for promoting innovative and influential music across various genres.

The first session by The Cure was recorded in December 1978 and featured songs that would later appear on their debut album, “Three Imaginary Boys.” This session is notable for its raw sound, displaying the band’s early post-punk roots. Tracks typically included from this session are “Killing an Arab,” “10:15 Saturday Night,” and “Fire in Cairo,” all showcasing the stark, angular guitar work and minimalist aesthetic that defined their early music.

These Peel Sessions not only provided listeners with early versions of some of The Cure’s most beloved tracks but also charted the band’s artistic development. They are often more stripped down than the album versions, offering a unique insight into the band’s creative process and the foundational elements of their music.

For fans of The Cure and collectors of Peel Sessions recordings, these tracks are essential listening. They offer a glimpse into the formative years of one of the most enduring and influential bands in the alternative rock scene, showcasing raw and unfiltered performances that helped define the band’s sound.

An archetypal Peel Session, this December 1978 four-song set predates the Cure’s first single, “Killing an Arab,” included here in a faster, snottier version that drips punk attitude. The other three songs happen to be the other three really good songs from the Cure’s uneven first album, THREE IMAGINARY BOYS: the obsessive “10.15 Saturday Night,” the chanting, Siouxsie-like “Fire in Cairo” and that pure pop nugget “Boys Don’t Cry.”

In true Peel Session form, the performances are crisp, unpretentious, and stripped-down. This is as good as Peel Sessions get!
