Wire – The Drill – Cassette

Wire released SNAKEDRILL, an EP that contained a track called “Drill.” The album THE DRILL takes “Drill” the song as its starting point, and mutates that song through a series of alterations, including a 12-minute long, high-speed version recorded in Chicago, that’s fast enough to function as the aural equivalent of a strobe light set on “epilepsy.”

The Drill represents a departure from Wire’s earlier sound, which was characterized by angular guitar-driven post-punk. The EP showcases the band’s experimentation with electronic and industrial elements, reflecting their willingness to explore new sonic territories.

The track “The Drill” itself is an atmospheric and hypnotic composition that combines repetitive rhythms, electronic textures, and spoken word vocals. It creates a sense of tension and intensity through its repetitive motifs and gradually building layers of sound.

The album’s unconventional approach and its departure from the band’s established sound received mixed reactions from both critics and fans. Some praised Wire’s willingness to evolve and experiment, while others missed the more guitar-oriented sound of their earlier releases.

Other highlights include the tricked out, hip-hop groove of “What’s Your Desire?” the jittering beat and distorted vocals of “Jumping Mint?” and the almost pastoral (though still rather uptempo, to put it mildly) “Did You Dugga?” THE DRILL is an odd album from an odd band.

“The Drill” represents a significant point in Wire’s discography, marking a transitional phase in their musical exploration. It showcases the band’s willingness to push boundaries and challenge their listeners’ expectations, a characteristic that has defined their career.

Despite its experimental nature, “The Drill” remains a notable release within Wire’s catalog and has gained a cult following among fans of post-punk and experimental music. It exemplifies the band’s commitment to artistic growth and their ability to continually reinvent their sound.

Not a pop record in the conventional sense, it will suit those with a hankering for the experimental. It’s also worth noting that the album DUGGA DUGGA DUGGA is a tribute to “Drill,” the same Wire song that started this whole affair, featuring a number of further mutations and reworkings by a variety of other (mostly) electronic artists.
