On MONSTERS, Jad Fair teams up with the Canadian proto-surf band, Phono-Comb. The full title of the album is actually MONSTERS, LULLABIES, …AND THE OCCASIONAL FLYING SAUCER. Add “love” and “romance,” and you pretty much have the contents of these 17 songs.

The album includes dirge-like numbers (“The Beast Within”) and revved-up speedsters (“Object: To Serve Man”). Fair’s collaborations always offer a fascinating look at the consistency of his vision. They also speak for his excellent taste in sparring partners. Fair has recorded with Yo La Tengo, Shapir-O’Rama, Daniel Johnston, and The Pastels. Phono-Comb is clearly a group of Fair fans. The band bends its style to meet his, and Fair reciprocates. Had these two parties never met, “Just Across the Street” couldn’t have happened. The cleanly recorded MONSTER is what sympathetic collaboration is all about.
