BUMPER CROP appeared in 1987 featuring selections recorded in '83 and '84 (some tracks appear in another version on their cassette-only release, FOR YEARS WE STOOD CLEARLY AS ONE THING). 1983 was the year that keyboardist and noted producer Steve Fisk joined, adding another voice to what had been a dual-guitar front line. As an all-instrumental band, this additional color increased the range of their palette. The music draws from everything from surf to soundtracks. Pell Mell can be atmospheric or rock out like a banshee on fire. Their writing is full of little surprises--shifts in rhythm, overlaying of unexpected parts--and adds to their dynamism. Recorded shortly after their debut EP RHYMING GUITARS, BUMPER CROP impressively built upon the strengths already evident in Pell Mell's debut
