The Dead Youth - Intense Brutality - Cassette
In the early '90s, the Dead Youth (not to be confused with the Dead Boys, the Dead Kennedys, or the Dead Milkmen) enjoyed a small underground following playing grindcore -- an unmelodic, mercilessly heavy style of death metal thrash that's even more extreme than bands like Slayer and Testament. Comparable to the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Deicide, the Dead Youth make no concessions whatsoever to commercial rock tastes on the appropriately titled Intense Brutality. Titles like "Disease And Decay" and "Enema Picnic" underscore the twisted nature of the Dead Youth's lyrics, which aren't at all easy to understand. Critics of grindcore would note that lead vocalist Dave Piekarz doesn't sing so much as grunt and groan, but then, that's exactly the point -- this type of CD isn't supposed to appeal to mainstream musical sensibilities. Though redundant and one-dimensional, Intense Brutality is definitely entertaining.
