SATURDAY NIGHT SUNDAY MORNING is Hugh Cornwell's last release as the lead singer for The Stranglers. It contains 12 tracks.
Although it came out around the same time as IN THE NIGHT, the first studio album by the new Stranglers lineup, 1993's SATURDAY NIGHT SUNDAY MORNING is a live recording from August, 1990, featuring one of singer/guitarist Hugh Cornwell's last performances with the group. Hearing this album next to IN THE NIGHT makes clear just how important Cornwell was to the band; although J.J. Burnel's hyperactive bass and Dave Greenfield's Doors-inspired organ were the group's sonic trademarks, Cornwell's voice, alternately snarling and delicate, was its heart. The set list ranges from early punky singles like "No More Heroes" through mid-period pop experiments like the manic "Duchess" and the stately "Golden Brown," all the way to the glorious "Always the Sun," perhaps the band's finest moment and one of the '80s' great pop singles. The set also includes the group's popular covers of "96 Tears" and "All Day and All of the Night."
