Certain Distant Suns – Huge EP – Cassette

Certain Distant Suns is a lesser-known band that emerged from the vibrant alternative rock scene of the early 1990s. Their EP titled “Huge,” released in 1993, captures the spirit of the era with its blend of grunge influences, alternative rock, and a hint of psychedelic undertones. Despite not reaching mainstream success, the band and this EP hold a niche appeal, especially among enthusiasts of the era’s alternative music landscape.

Justin Mroz (vocals, guitar) and Lance Stewart (bass, vocals) formed Certain Distant Suns in 1989 in a suburb just north of Chicago. Mroz recruited his cousin Jared (drums), later adding guitarist Dan Zigmund and guitarist/vocalist Kerry Finerty. With a dance-rock style and swirling guitars, the band gigged around Chicago and self-released the Huge EP in 1992 when they became popular. The next year brought another EP, Dogrocket.

The “Huge” EP by Certain Distant Suns showcases a collection of tracks that epitomize the alternative rock sound of the early ’90s, characterized by gritty guitar riffs, emotive lyrics, and dynamic compositions. This release allows listeners to dive into the band’s exploration of sound and emotion, reflecting both introspection and the broader cultural vibes of the time.

Emphasizing distorted, loud electric guitar riffs that were a hallmark of the grunge and alternative rock scene. Despite the rough edges, the tracks often carry melodic hooks that make them accessible and radio-friendly. The lyrics tend to explore themes of disillusionment, personal struggle, and a search for meaning, common in the genre.

Huge did not achieve major commercial success, it received positive feedback within alternative music circles for its authentic sound and heartfelt delivery. Fans of the genre appreciated the EP for its honest representation of the early ’90s alternative rock spirit.

Certain Distant Suns and their Huge EP remain a part of the rich tapestry of 1990s alternative rock. While they may not have reached the heights of some of their contemporaries, their work is appreciated by those who explore the depths of the genre and its less mainstream contributions.

For enthusiasts of 1990s alternative and grunge music, the Huge EP by Certain Distant Suns offers a glimpse into the era’s musical diversity and the many bands that contributed to its sound. It stands as a testament to a time when rock music was intensely expressive and unafraid to delve into deep emotional territories, making it a valuable piece for collectors and fans alike.
