Compilation – Live Stiffs Live – Cassette

Live Stiffs Live is a compilation album released in 1978 featuring various artists from the Stiff Records label. Stiff Records was an influential British independent record label known for its roster of punk and new wave artists in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In order to promote their label and their roster, Stiff Records devised the Live Stiffs package tour as way to showcase all of their key artists (Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Lew Lewis Reformer), as well as themselves.

Live Stiffs Live captures live recordings from the Stiffs Live tour, a package tour that took place in the UK in 1977 and featured performances by artists such as Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric, and Larry Wallis. The tour was known for its high-energy shows and collaborative performances.

The Live Stiffs shows became notorious for their intoxicatingly and intoxicated ragged performances, which the live album Live Stiffs captures particularly well.

The album includes a mix of original songs and cover versions performed by the various artists on the tour. It showcases the raw and energetic live performances that were a hallmark of the punk and new wave movements.

Some notable tracks on “Live Stiffs Live” include Elvis Costello & The Attractions’ “Watching the Detectives,” Ian Dury & The Blockheads’ “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll,” and Nick Lowe’s “I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock ‘n’ Roll).” The album captures the vibrant and rebellious spirit of the era and provides a snapshot of the Stiff Records scene.

Elvis Costello’s torchy version of Bacharach-David’s “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself” is a highlight, as are Nick Lowe’s two cuts, the otherwise-unavailable “Let’s Eat” and a rocking version of “I Knew the Bride,” which he never released during the late ’70s. Dury and Wreckless Eric are nearly as good, and the entire record captures the wild, careening spirit of Stiff. it’s fun, trashy rock and roll.

“Live Stiffs Live” is highly regarded among fans of punk and new wave music, offering a lively and engaging listening experience that showcases the talent and energy of the artists involved.
