Happy Flowers – My Skin Covers My Body – Cassette

My Skin Covers My Body is an album by the American experimental rock band Happy Flowers. Released in 1985, it is their debut studio album and showcases their unconventional and satirical approach to music. The name of the album was taken from a section of a Childcraft book on health, and you probably can’t find a better collection of childhood angst, phobias, and concerns.

Happy Flowers, formed by vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Mr. Anus and Mr. Horribly Charred Infant, gained recognition for their irreverent and absurd style, incorporating elements of noise rock, punk, and performance art. “My Skin Covers My Body” exemplifies their unique brand of humor and musical experimentation.

The album features a collection of short, fast-paced, and often comically crude songs that explore a wide range of topics, including social commentary, bodily functions, and absurd scenarios. The band’s lo-fi production style adds to the raw and DIY aesthetic of the music.

The drums pound and the guitars shriek and squall mercilessly, all while Mr. Anus and Mr. Horribly Charred Infant scream apologies/warnings/pleas like, “Pleeeeease don’t spank me/I’m too big to be spanked!” Occasionally it congeals into something that resembles an actual song, as on “Not Fade Away” or “Jenny Tried to Kiss Me at Recess,” but mostly the instrumentation just provides a backing track to these little slices taken from adolescent nightmares.

Standout tracks from My Skin Covers My Body include “I Pissed My Pants,” “Mom I Gave the Cat Some Acid,” and “Dildo Hospital.” These songs showcase the band’s confrontational and humorous lyrics, delivered with frenetic energy and a disregard for conventional song structures.

My Skin Covers My Body received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics appreciating its subversive and unconventional nature, while others found it too bizarre or offensive. Nonetheless, it remains a notable release in Happy Flowers’ discography and has gained a cult following among fans of experimental and outsider music.

For fans of unconventional and offbeat music, My Skin Covers My Body offers a dose of absurdity and sonic experimentation. It represents a unique and often polarizing chapter in the alternative music landscape of the 1980s.
