Henry Kaiser And Sergei Kuriokhin – Popular Science – Cassette

Popular Science is a collaborative album between American guitarist Henry Kaiser and Russian pianist Sergei Kuriokhin, released in 1989. Both artists are known for their avant-garde and experimental approaches to music, making this collaboration a fascinating exploration of genre-blending and improvisation.

This set features the duets of Henry Kaiser and the late Russian keyboardist Sergei Kuriokhin. Both play Synclavier keyboards, with the former also playing guitar. The pieces range from the friendly strut of “Rattlesnake Round-Up” to the wacky hoedown of “Electricity Vs. Foods.” “The Concept Of Concept” starts off as a bluesy reverie as played by Kaiser, who hands it over to Kuriokhin, easing it into a classically evocative European landscape.

The two men each spoke little of the other’s native tongue, and perhaps because of that linguistic barrier, communicated all the more effectively as improvising musicians. A warm friendliness runs throughout this entire piece, and for anyone unfamiliar with or wary of the world of improvised music, POPULAR SCIENCE makes for a most hospitable entry point.

The album uniquely fuses elements of jazz, rock, electronic music, and free improvisation, showcasing the formidable talents of both musicians. Kaiser’s guitar work is experimental and wide-ranging, using a variety of effects to create sounds that go beyond traditional guitar playing. Kuriokhin contributes with his dynamic piano techniques, which oscillate between classical influences and free-form jazz improvisation.

Popular Science is characterized by its unpredictability and the spontaneous interplay between Kaiser and Kuriokhin. The tracks can range from atmospheric and ambient to chaotic and intense, reflecting the artists’ shared interest in pushing musical boundaries and exploring new sonic landscapes.

The album serves as an exemplary model of cross-cultural collaboration, blending Kaiser’s American musical sensibilities with Kuriokhin’s Russian background. This blend not only produces a unique sound but also a dialogue between different musical traditions and approaches. “Popular Science” is celebrated for its innovative approach and remains a noteworthy project within the careers of both musicians, appealing to fans of avant-garde music and those interested in the capabilities of improvisational collaboration.
