John Stubblefield – Bushman Song – Cassette
John Stubblefield was an American jazz saxophonist and composer who was active from the 1970s until his passing in 2005. He was known for his versatile playing style and his contributions to the avant-garde and post-bop jazz scenes.
Stubblefield worked with notable jazz musicians throughout his career, including the Art Ensemble of Chicago, McCoy Tyner, and the Mingus Big Band. He also released several albums as a leader, showcasing his skills as a performer and composer.
On the surface, John Stubblefield and his compatriots offered a number of approaches (funk-fusion, Latin, calypso, swing) creatively rendered. But careful listening revealed an all-too-telling commercial underbelly that put subtle though damaging constraints on the music.
So while the leader had a passionate tenor outing (shades of the Pharoah Sanders of yesteryear) on the Trane-influenced “East,” and played some sinewy soprano on the Weather Report-like title cut and “Things.” Keyboardist Geri Allen spotlighted her adept skills at imaginatively convoluting phrases over and around stated and implied bar lines and the whole band illustrated solid facility as a group as well as individuals
