Scorn – Ellipsis – Cassette

Ellipsis is a remix album by Scorn, released in 1995. Scorn is a project led by Mick Harris, a former member of the pioneering grindcore band Napalm Death. After leaving Napalm Death, Harris shifted his focus to the experimental and industrial side of electronic music with Scorn, creating a unique blend of dark ambient, industrial, and dub.

ELLIPSIS is an album of remixes. ELLIPSIS is Scorn’s music reinterpreted by some of the brighter shining lights on electronica’s vast axis. But, mind you, the participants chosen are particularly reflective of Scorn’s caustic worldview. Coil, Scanner, Autechre, Bill Laswell, and a gaggle of like-minded souls each take a crack at disseminating Harris and Bullen’s cold little universes.

Ellipsis consists of remixes of tracks from Scorn’s previous albums, particularly focusing on material from “Evanescence” (1994). The album features contributions from various artists, each bringing their distinct style to the remixes. The result is a collection that spans a range of electronic subgenres, including dub, industrial, and ambient, all with a dark, atmospheric edge.

Key Contributors and Tracks:

“Silver Rain Fell (Meat Beat Manifesto Mix)” – Remixed by Meat Beat Manifesto, this track infuses the original with a more pronounced industrial and dub influence.
“Night Tide (Autechre Mix)” – Autechre’s remix adds their signature glitchy and experimental touch, transforming the original into a more abstract soundscape.
“Automata (Bill Laswell Mix)” – Renowned bassist and producer Bill Laswell contributes a mix that emphasizes deep basslines and a dense, immersive atmosphere.

The whole affair is not only successful but adds a whole extra dimension to the duo’s scope.Coil’s mix of “Dreamspace” immerses the original track’s spooky groove in a psychedelic bath full of corrosive, “Hellraiser”-esque strings and Lovecraftian oil of gothic. Autechre’s version of “Fallling” whips the dub beats into a hyper-toxic frenzy where pinging synths erupt out of disintegrating percussive galaxies. ELLIPSIS is awesome, confrontational music, in both size and execution.

Ellipsis was well-received within the experimental and electronic music communities. Critics and fans appreciated the diversity of the remixes and the fresh perspectives brought by the contributing artists. The album highlighted the versatility of Scorn’s music, demonstrating how it could be reinterpreted across different electronic subgenres.

The album is an important part of Scorn’s discography, showcasing Mick Harris’s willingness to collaborate and experiment. It also helped to further cement Scorn’s position within the experimental electronic music scene. The contributions from well-known artists like Autechre and Bill Laswell brought additional attention to the project, attracting fans from various corners of the electronic music world.

For listeners interested in dark, atmospheric electronic music and the intersections of industrial, dub, and ambient, Ellipsis offers a compelling and varied listening experience. The album stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit of the 1990s electronic music scene and the innovative potential of remix culture.
