Squeeze – Babylon And On – Cassette
Babylon and On is the seventh studio album by the British new wave band Squeeze. It was released in 1987 and marked a departure from the band’s earlier sound, incorporating more polished production and a wider range of musical styles.
BABYLON AND ON is Squeeze’s second album after reforming in the mid-’80s, their return was heralded with the release of COSI FAN TUTTI FRUTTI in 1985. This is a solid band effort, with all on board clearly back in the swing of things. The results mark a certain peak for the group.
“Babylon and On” features a mix of pop, rock, and soul influences, with catchy hooks and clever lyrics that Squeeze is known for. The album includes the singles “Hourglass” and “853-5937,” which received moderate success on the charts. The band’s signature songwriting style, characterized by witty wordplay and observations of everyday life, is prevalent throughout the album.
Squeeze fashioned a fully engaging album, with hooks that make sly demands on the attention of the listener. The dazzling “Hourglass” was a minor hit. “Hourglass,” as well as several other numbers here, revels in Squeeze’s signature sound: idiosyncratically structured choruses made inviting by the enthusiasm of multiple voices. “Tough Love” presents another one of their finely detailed little vignettes, while “Trust Me To Open My Mouth” offers a narrator flawed in familiar ways. For all of its endearing familiarity however,
The production on “Babylon and On” is notably more polished compared to Squeeze’s earlier albums, with a greater emphasis on studio techniques and layered arrangements. This shift in sound was partly influenced by the band’s collaboration with producer Tony Visconti, known for his work with artists like David Bowie and T. Rex.
While Babylon and On may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as some of Squeeze’s earlier albums, it remains a solid and well-crafted record that showcases the band’s songwriting talents and their ability to adapt their sound to the changing musical landscape of the late 1980s.
BABYLON AND ON is a unique addition to the band’s discography.
