The Damned – The Peel Sessions – Cassette
The Peel Sessions is a collection of recordings made by the British punk rock band, The Damned, for the BBC Radio 1 program hosted by John Peel. The Peel Sessions were a series of live studio performances that showcased the band’s raw energy and distinctive sound.
A very strong set, recorded live in the studio in late 1976, the Damned are at their peak, and some versions here are as good as, if not better than the originals. “Neat, Neat, Neat,” “New Rose,” “I Fall,” and most of the other songs that make up their debut are here. The band proves its versatility, going from the raging punk of “So Messed Up,” which is as menacing as anything the Sex Pistols ever recorded, to the very Doors-ish “Feel the Pain.”
The Peel Sessions were known for their raw, unpolished sound, showcasing The Damned’s intense live performance style. These recordings capture the band’s energy and provide a unique glimpse into their early years.
The Peel Sessions is a significant part of The Damned’s discography and offers a valuable documentation of their influential presence in the punk rock scene.
A highly recommended album that proves the Damned were a step above the majority of their punk brethren.
