The Three Johns – The Death Of Everything – Cassette

The Death of Everything is an album by the British post-punk band The Three Johns. The album was released in 1988 and is one of the band’s notable releases within the post-punk and alternative rock genres.

The Three Johns were known for their politically charged lyrics, energetic sound, and a distinctive blend of punk, new wave, and experimental influences. “The Death of Everything” showcases the band’s ability to tackle social and political themes while delivering catchy and thought-provoking music.

At this career juncture, the Johns had cult status written all over them, mostly due to people realizing that Langford had a connection with the much-loved Mekons, and that led to indie label Caroline taking a chance with this record.

The album’s title, The Death of Everything, suggests a thematic exploration of societal and existential issues, which is characteristic of The Three Johns’ lyrical style.

The album’s music combines angular guitar work, driving rhythms, and provocative lyrics, creating a unique sonic landscape that engages listeners on multiple levels.

If you’re interested in exploring The Three Johns’ music and “The Death of Everything,” you can find the album on music streaming platforms or consider checking out local record stores or online music shops that specialize in post-punk or alternative releases. The album offers a window into the band’s socio-political commentary and their contribution to the alternative music scene of the late 1980s.

Part-live, part-studio, although both sound roughly the same, Death is more menacing than earlier Johns records, but the songs, especially “Bullshitiaco” and the overlong “Go Ahead Bikini” are more jagged and gloomy than prior Johns rant. Also, there seems to be a bitter tone to this record, heard in its attacks on Johnny Rotten and pop music in general (“Nonsense Spews From My Song Machine”); still, it’s a fine slice of the Johns.
