Sugar – Beaster – Cassette

Beaster is an EP by the American alternative rock band Sugar, released in 1993. Sugar was formed by singer-songwriter Bob Mould, who was previously known for his work with the influential punk band Husker Du. “Beaster” is often regarded as one of Sugar’s most intense and experimental releases.

Between the trance-like “Come Around” and the swirling “Walking Away,” Sugar’s second album, BEASTER (1993), is a sonic whirlwind that seems to function as a cathartic primal scream for Bob Mould, allowing him to exorcise personal issues.

The EP showcases a heavier and darker side of Sugar’s sound compared to their debut album, “Copper Blue.” It features a blend of aggressive guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and introspective lyrics. The songs on “Beaster” delve into themes of pain, struggle, and personal reflection.

Musically, “Beaster” incorporates elements of alternative rock, grunge, and noise pop. The guitar work is characterized by thick and distorted tones, creating a wall of sound that adds to the EP’s intensity. The rhythm section provides a strong and driving backbone to the songs, while Mould’s vocals range from raw and anguished to melodic and emotive.

The EP opens with the powerful track “Come Around,” setting the tone for the rest of the record with its dynamic shifts and energetic performances. Other notable tracks include “Tilted,” which features a memorable guitar riff and a catchy chorus, and “JC Auto,” a song that explores religious themes with a driving and relentless energy.

After a series of drum rolls, “Tilted,” a grinding rocker barely contained by a pop structure, sets the stage for Mould’s most furious work since 1990’s BLACK SHEETS OF RAIN, while “Judas Cradle” is built on Malcolm Travis’ pulverizing drumming, sustained, thick slabs of guitar, and clangorous feedback. The record’s centerpiece is the vicious “JC Auto,” in which Mould sardonically recasts himself as Jesus Christ, questioning the sincerity of his followers.

“Feeling Better” adds some synthesized horn sounds to the mix, while retaining the overall mood of the record, ending with the words, “There’s nothing left for me to say / I guess it’s time to walk away.” By the time that “Walking Away” fades away, listeners are liable to notice that they haven’t been breathing for a while. BEASTER is an astonishing 30-odd minute rollercoaster ride through dark places, and, without a doubt, one of Mould’s finest releases.

Lyrically, “Beaster” delves into personal struggles and introspection. The themes of pain, isolation, and inner turmoil are prevalent throughout the EP, reflecting Mould’s own emotional journey during that period of his life.

Beaster stands out in Sugar’s discography as a bold and intense release, showcasing the band’s willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of alternative rock. It captures a raw and emotional energy that resonates with listeners, making it a favorite among fans of the band and a significant addition to the alternative rock canon.
