Murder Inc – Murder Inc – Compact Disc
The eponymous album Murder Inc by the band Murder Inc, released in 1992, is a significant and intriguing entry in the world of industrial and experimental music. This album stands out as a testament to the audacious and boundary-pushing nature of the industrial music genre during that era.
Murder Inc was a collaborative project that brought together notable musicians from the industrial music scene, including Chris Connelly and Paul Barker, both of whom were associated with the influential band Ministry. Additionally, the lineup featured Roland Barker, who contributed vocals, keyboards, and programming. This amalgamation of talent laid the foundation for a sonic journey that ventured into uncharted territories.
Following yet another temporary breakup in the early ’90s, the members of the eternally volatile Killing Joke re-formed minus vocalist Jaz Coleman under the Murder Inc. banner. Including Revolting Cocks vocalist Chris Connelly, guitarist Geordie Walker, bassist Paul Raven, and drummers Paul Ferguson and Martin Atkins (ex-PiL), the band conspired to record 1992’s eponymous LP for independent Invisible Records.
Sonically, Murder Inc is characterized by its dark, edgy, and abrasive soundscapes. It masterfully blends elements of industrial, electronic, and avant-garde music, resulting in a musical experience that is as immersive as it is disconcerting. The album’s sonic textures and relentless rhythms create an atmosphere that mirrors the industrial and dystopian themes explored in its lyrics.
Lyrically, the album delves into a cryptic and abstract realm, touching on themes of violence, control, and the complex web of societal issues. These lyrics, often enigmatic and open to interpretation, contribute to the album’s overall sense of unease and disquiet.
Despite mixed response from critics and fans over the group’s avant-garde alt-rock, a short bout of touring encouraged the band to carry on long enough to record the following year’s Corpuscle EP. But Murder Inc. disintegrated as soon as a financially enticing recording contract for a newly re-formed Killing Joke hit the negotiating table, and 1999’s Locate Subvert Terminate: The Complete Murder Inc. collection would serve as last will and testament to the band’s brief existence.
Murder Inc may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as some of its contemporaries, it remains a compelling and challenging work of art that continues to find appreciation among fans of avant-garde and industrial music. Its enduring appeal lies in its willingness to defy conventions and its ability to evoke a visceral response from listeners, making it a noteworthy entry in the annals of experimental music history.
