Sham 69 is an English punk rock band that emerged during the late 1970s punk rock movement. The band was formed in Hersham, Surrey, in 1975. Sham 69’s original lineup consisted of Jimmy Pursey (vocals), Dave Parsons (guitar), Dave Tregunna (bass), and Mark Cain (drums).
Sham 69 was known for their energetic and anthemic punk sound. Their music often featured straightforward, catchy melodies and lyrics that touched on social and political issues of the time.
The band gained attention with their early singles, including “I Don’t Wanna” and “Borstal Breakout.” Their debut album, “Tell Us the Truth,” was released in 1978. One of Sham 69’s most well-known songs is “If the Kids Are United,” which became an anthem for the punk movement. Other notable tracks include “Hurry Up Harry” and “Angels with Dirty Faces.”
Sham 69 went through various lineup changes over the years, with Jimmy Pursey being the consistent member. They released several albums, including “The Adventures of the Hersham Boys” (1979) and “That’s Life” (1978).
