Japan – Tin Drum – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

“Tin Drum” is the fifth and final studio album by the British new wave band Japan, released on November 13, 1981.

Japan was formed in 1974 and consisted of David Sylvian (vocals, guitar), Mick Karn (bass guitar, saxophone), Steve Jansen (drums), Richard Barbieri (keyboards), and Rob Dean (guitar). They were known for their unique blend of new wave, synth-pop, and art rock.

Tin Drum showcases Japan’s transition from their earlier glam rock sound to a more minimalist, atmospheric, and experimental style. The album incorporates elements of electronic music, world music, and traditional Japanese music.

The album features eight tracks, including the singles “Ghosts,” “Canton,” and “Visions of China.” Other notable tracks include “Sons of Pioneers” and “Still Life in Mobile Homes.”

Tin Drum is considered Japan’s most successful album, reaching number 12 on the UK Albums Chart. It received critical acclaim for its innovative sound and groundbreaking approach to music production.

Tin Drum has been cited as a major influence on later artists and bands, particularly in the realm of synth-pop and alternative music. Its atmospheric and textured soundscapes continue to resonate with listeners. Despite the success of “Tin Drum,” Japan disbanded shortly after its release, with members pursuing solo careers and other musical projects.

Tin Drum is a seminal album in Japan’s discography, representing the peak of their creative output and their lasting impact on the new wave and synth-pop genres.
