In The Nursery – Counterpoint – Vinyl Record
In the Nursery’s Counterpoint is a compilation album released in 1989 that captures the English band’s early neoclassical dark wave and martial industrial sound. This collection, released on Wax Trax Records, pulls together tracks from several of their formative EPs and mini-albums, recorded between 1983 and 1986. Comprising instrumental compositions that blend haunting orchestration with electronic and industrial elements, Counterpoint reflects the duo’s talent for creating atmospheric, cinematic soundscapes.
The album’s themes often delve into the militaristic and the dramatic, a signature approach that has distinguished In the Nursery in the alternative and experimental music world. Tracks like “Breach Birth” and “Compulsion” showcase the band’s layered arrangements of drums, synths, and darkly melodic instrumentation, evoking a sense of urgency and intensity. Counterpoint is steeped in the martial rhythms and anthemic qualities that became synonymous with the band, influenced by classical and cinematic music.
Counterpoint includes the powerful ‘Iskra,’ from the From Torture to Conscience compilation, and the evocative “Sentient,” taken from their Abstract Magazine feature, blending synthetic and orchestral sounds with percussive military beats. Tracks like “Arm Me Audacity” and “Blind Me” highlight In the Nursery’s ability to create compositions that feel like soundtracks to unwritten stories, combining electronic textures with a classical structure to create emotionally charged and immersive listening experiences.
Produced by band members Klive and Nigel Humberstone, Counterpoint remains a significant work within the neoclassical dark wave genre. It offers fans a comprehensive look at the duo’s early explorations, helping to establish their reputation as pioneers of cinematic, industrial-influenced music that continues to resonate with modern listeners interested in atmospheric and emotionally evocative soundscapes
