Spot 1019 was a rock band that emerged in the early 1980s in Santa Cruz, California. The group was formed by vocalist Joe Sloan and bassist Jimb Lyons, who had previously played together in a campus band called the Tokyo Negroes in 1979. After college, they relocated to San Francisco by the late 1980s.
Spot 1019 was known for their humorous rock music, which incorporated elements of country western, blues, pop, and punk. Joe Sloan’s imaginative and whimsical lyrics often touched on themes like UFOs, bacon, psychedelic drugs, and fictional rock festivals featuring characters from 1960s pop culture.
Their self-titled debut album, Spot 1019, was initially released in 1986 on Camper Van Beethoven’s label, Pitch-A-Tent Records. The album was later re-released by Frontier Records in 1990. The tracklist includes songs such as ‘Prisoner of Mankind,’ ‘Dinky Dog, the Demon Master,’ and ‘Milkbomb.’
The band continued to produce music throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, releasing albums like This World Owes Me a Buzz (1988) and Still…Again (1990). Despite some college radio airplay and regular touring, they never achieved widespread popularity. They eventually started their own label, Donut Pole Records, releasing additional material on CD. Spot 1019 wound down by the late 1990s but occasionally reunited for performances, with their last show taking place in June 2012 at the Bottom of the Hill club in San Francisco. Vocalist Joe Sloan passed away in 2021 in Portland, Oregon.
