Formed in 1984 in Los Angeles by drummer and filmmaker Dave Markey after the dissolution of his previous band, SIN 34, Painted Willie carved a niche with their distinctive blend of punk energy and experimental elements.
The album features a lineup comprising Dave Markey on drums and vocals, Phil Newman on bass and vocals, and Vic Makauskas on guitar and vocals.
Recorded at Spinhead Studios in January 1987, Upsidedowntown showcases the band’s evolution from their hardcore roots to a more alternative rock sound, incorporating quirky, experimental, and psychedelic elements.
The album’s production was a collaborative effort, with Painted Willie serving as producers and Greg Ginn, guitarist of Black Flag, as an assistant producer.
