Released on October 19, 1999, Peace is the eighth and final studio album by Eurythmics, marking their return after nearly a decade apart. Following their 1989 album We Too Are One, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart pursued solo projects before reuniting for Peace, an album that embraces their signature blend of synth-pop, rock, and soulful balladry, but with a more mature, introspective tone.
The album’s title reflects its themes of reconciliation, hope, and global unity, aligning with the band’s activism and humanitarian efforts. While it didn’t achieve the massive commercial success of their ‘80s work, Peace was well-received and is considered a graceful and poignant conclusion to their studio discography.
Unlike the synth-heavy pop of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983) or the dance-infused rock of Revenge (1986), Peace takes a more organic, lushly arranged approach. Much of the album also reflects personal reflection and emotional depth, as heard in tracks like “17 Again” and “Beautiful Child.”
While Peace didn’t match the commercial heights of Eurythmics’ ‘80s albums, it was still critically well-received, praised for its maturity, strong songwriting, and powerful performances. The album reached #4 on the UK Albums Chart and #25 on the US Billboard 200.
To promote Peace, Eurythmics embarked on the Peace Tour, donating proceeds to organizations like Greenpeace and Amnesty International, emphasizing their commitment to activism. However, after the tour, Lennox and Stewart parted ways musically, making Peace their last studio album.
Despite this, the duo remained on good terms and reunited for occasional performances, such as at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2022.
Peace serves as a fitting farewell to Eurythmics’ incredible career, blending introspection, hope, and a call for unity in a way that resonates even today.
