Description
Peter Gabriel – Deutsches Album – 180 Gram Vinyl Record
Released in 1982, Deutsches Album is the German-language version of Peter Gabriel’s fourth self-titled album, often referred to as Security in English-speaking markets. Unlike a simple translation of the lyrics, this album features significant reworkings of the vocal phrasing and musical elements to better fit the rhythmic and emotional nuances of the German language. Gabriel, known for his meticulous attention to detail and cultural curiosity, worked closely with lyricist Horst Königstein to ensure that the German lyrics retained the meaning and atmosphere of the original songs while also feeling natural within the language’s structure.
Musically, Deutsches Album maintains the innovative, world music-infused soundscapes of Security, which saw Gabriel experimenting heavily with digital sampling, electronic textures, and African-inspired rhythms. Songs like “Der Rhythmus der Hitze” (originally “The Rhythm of the Heat”) and “San Jacinto” remain deeply atmospheric, with layered percussion, haunting synthesizers, and Gabriel’s emotive vocal delivery, while “Keine Selbstkontrolle” (“No Self Control”) and “Schock den Affen” (“Shock the Monkey”) retain their driving, kinetic energy. Notably, Gabriel did not simply overdub new vocals but rather re-recorded many of them from scratch, sometimes altering the instrumental arrangements to accommodate the German phrasing.
While Deutsches Album was primarily intended for German-speaking audiences, it has since gained recognition among Gabriel’s international fans as a fascinating alternative take on one of his most experimental and groundbreaking records. The album’s willingness to adapt both linguistically and musically highlights Gabriel’s deep respect for cultural expression and his commitment to making his music resonate across different languages. For fans of his work, Deutsches Album offers a unique listening experience, revealing new dimensions to familiar songs through the sharp consonants and rich intonations of the German language.
