Can’t Stand The Rezillos is the debut studio album by the Scottish punk rock band The Rezillos. It was released in 1978 and is considered a classic of the punk and new wave genres.
The Rezillos were known for their energetic and catchy punk sound, characterized by fast-paced guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and the distinctive vocal interplay between lead vocalists Eugene Reynolds and Fay Fife. Their music incorporated elements of pop and glam rock, creating a unique and vibrant sound.
‘Can’t Stand The Rezillos’ features the band’s most popular and enduring songs, including the hit singles ‘I Can’t Stand My Baby’ and ‘Top of the Pops.’ The album captures The Rezillos’ infectious energy and irreverent attitude, with lyrics that touch on themes of love, rebellion, and societal critique.
Unusually for a punk rock/new wave group, the album featured several sixties covers, ‘Glad All Over’ (originally a hit for the Dave Clark Five), ‘Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight’ (originally by Fleetwood Mac) and ‘I Like It’, a Gerry & the Pacemakers hit.
The record reached #16 in the UK Albums Chart. Trouser Press called the band ‘a blast of fresh air compared to the more serious bands of new wave’s first charge’ and praised the album as ‘an action-packed document of their pop/camp approach’.
The album’s raw and infectious punk sound, combined with the band’s playful and witty songwriting, garnered The Rezillos a dedicated following during their initial run in the late 1970s. Although the band disbanded in 1979, they have periodically reunited and continue to perform and release new music, maintaining their status as influential figures in punk rock and new wave.
