Released in 2006, Blunted at Birth is the debut album by Cannabis Corpse, a band formed as a parody and tribute to Cannibal Corpse and the wider death metal genre. Based in Richmond, Virginia, the band was started by Philip “Landphil” Hall (bass/vocals, also of Municipal Waste and Iron Reagan) and his brother Josh “Hallhammer” Hall (drums), along with Andy “Weedgrinder” Horn (vocals). The album takes classic old-school death metal brutality and infuses it with humorous, marijuana-themed lyrics and song titles that parody Cannibal Corpse’s discography.
Musically, Blunted at Birth is far from just a joke album. The band executes true, no-frills death metal, influenced by Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Morbid Angel, and Deicide. The album features blast beats, guttural growls, chugging riffage, and tight, groovy sections that stay true to the genre’s old-school roots. However, instead of brutal tales of gore and horror, Cannabis Corpse replace violent imagery with stoner humor, creating a unique fusion of brutality and comedy.
