Mark Lanegan (1964–2021) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician known for his distinctive and deep baritone voice. He was involved in various musical projects spanning different genres, including alternative rock, blues, folk, and electronic music.

Mark Lanegan gained prominence as the lead vocalist for the Seattle-based alternative rock band Screaming Trees. The band achieved success in the 1990s with albums like ‘Sweet Oblivion,’ which featured the hit single ‘Nearly Lost You.’

In addition to his work with Screaming Trees, Lanegan had a successful solo career. His solo albums often explored dark and introspective themes. Notable solo albums include ‘The Winding Sheet’ (1990), ‘Whiskey for the Holy Ghost’ (1994), and ‘Bubblegum’ (2004).

Lanegan collaborated with a wide range of artists and bands throughout his career. He worked with Kurt Cobain on Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ album, and he collaborated with Isobel Campbell on several albums, including ‘Ballad of the Broken Seas’ (2006) and ‘Hawk’ (2010).

Mark Lanegan was briefly a member of the supergroup Mad Season, which also included members of Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. They released the album ‘Above’ in 1995. Lanegan formed The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs. They released the album ‘Saturnalia’ in 2008.

Lanegan published his memoir, ‘Sing Backwards and Weep,’ in 2020. The book provides insights into his life, struggles with addiction, and experiences in the music industry.

Mark Lanegan passed away on February 22, 2022, at the age of 57. His death was confirmed by his family and management. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Mark Lanegan’s deep, soulful voice and his contributions to various musical projects left a lasting impact on the alternative and rock music scenes. He is remembered for his powerful and evocative performances, both as a frontman and as a solo artist.
