Released in 1990, This Is Our Music is the third and final studio album by the influential dream pop/slowcore band Galaxie 500. Known for their minimalist yet deeply emotional sound, the band—comprised of Dean Wareham (vocals, guitar), Naomi Yang (bass, vocals), and Damon Krukowski (drums)—created some of the most atmospheric and introspective indie rock of the late 1980s. Following their acclaimed albums Today (1988) and On Fire (1989), This Is Our Music continued their signature style of hushed vocals, reverb-soaked guitars, and hypnotic, slow-burning melodies, though with a slightly darker and moodier tone compared to their previous works.
While still rooted in the dreamy, Velvet Underground-meets-Sonic Youth aesthetic that defined their earlier records, This Is Our Music feels even more spacious and melancholic. Wareham’s detached, almost fragile vocals are front and center, floating over shimmering, delayed guitar work and Yang’s melodic, pulsing basslines. Krukowski’s drumming remains steady and understated, reinforcing the band’s intimate, hypnotic feel. The album’s title is an ironic nod to Ornette Coleman’s 1961 jazz album of the same name, reflecting the band’s offbeat, self-aware approach to their sound.

“Fourth of July” – Perhaps the band’s most iconic song, this track is a slow, meditative masterpiece. With its simple yet haunting lyrics (“I wrote a poem on a dog biscuit / And your dog refused to look at it”), it encapsulates Galaxie 500’s mix of melancholy and surreal humor.
“Hearing Voices” – A standout featuring Naomi Yang on lead vocals, adding a dreamy contrast to Wareham’s usual delivery.
“Summertime” – A laid-back, wistful track that captures the album’s nostalgic and reflective mood.
“Listen, The Snow Is Falling” – A Yoko Ono cover, closing the album with a beautifully ethereal, elongated version of the song, turning it into a slowcore dreamscape.

At the time of its release, This Is Our Music didn’t achieve major commercial success, but it has since been highly regarded as an essential album in the dream pop and slowcore canon. Along with their previous albums, Galaxie 500’s work would later influence bands like Low, Mazzy Star, and Beach House, helping to shape the atmospheric and introspective side of indie rock.
Despite their growing cult following, tensions within the band led to their breakup shortly after the album’s release. Dean Wareham went on to form Luna, while Yang and Krukowski continued as Damon & Naomi, both carrying elements of the Galaxie 500 sound into their later projects.
