The Thing – Peel Session – Vinyl Record

The Thing’s Peel Session captures the raw and improvisational energy of this avant-garde jazz trio, which consists of Mats Gustafsson (saxophones), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass), and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums). Known for their explosive sound that blends jazz with elements of free improvisation and rock, The Thing’s music is intense, powerful, and often straddles the boundary between structured jazz compositions and complete free-form chaos.

Their session for John Peel showcase their dynamic interplay and boundary-pushing sound. Typically, their performances include ferocious saxophone solos, deeply resonant basslines, and rapid-fire drumming, all contributing to a sound that’s both challenging and invigorating.

In a typical Peel Session setup, The Thing experiment and explore their musical boundaries in a live studio environment, potentially introducing their avant-garde jazz approach to a broader audience. Such sessions are highly prized for their historical and musical significance, providing a raw capture of the band’s energy without the polish of studio production.

This recording is essential for fans of experimental jazz and improvisational music, illustrating The Thing’s robust and energetic approach to live performance, and highlighting their contribution to contemporary jazz and beyond.
