Lava Love – Whole Lava Love – Vinyl Record

Whole Lava Love by Lava Love is an album that dives deep into the alternative rock scene of the mid-1990s. The band, hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, was part of the vibrant local music scene that produced a variety of eclectic and innovative sounds during that era.

An unfairly unknown Atlanta quintet of the early ’90s, Lava Love mix ’60s influences including the sort of Byrds-like jangly guitars and neo-psychedelic haze that all Georgia indie bands were required by law to adopt after R.E.M. showed up, with a post-punk aggression and a wicked sense of humor. Recording two hard-to-find but utterly delightful albums in the process. The group formed in Atlanta in the late ’80s, with the key songwriting members, singer Esta Hill, guitarist Drew Cavins, and bassist Paul Bracken, adding keyboardist Diana ‘Cookie’ Brindle and drummer Nathan Robbins to complete the lineup.

A single, ‘Perfect Gurl,’ came out in early 1990, followed by the Mitch Easter-produced Whole Lava Love on the local indie Sky Records later that year. A follow-up, Aphrodisia, came out in 1992, but the band split shortly thereafter. Hill and Brindle joined Hillbilly Frankenstein, a psychobilly band fronted by Guadalcanal Diary’s Jeff Walls. Cavins became a restaurateur, opening a popular grill in Atlanta’s Five Points neighborhood.

Lava Love was a female-fronted alternative rock band that blended elements of post-punk, dream pop, and indie rock. The band was known for their melodic yet edgy sound, characterized by jangly guitars, haunting vocals, and introspective lyrics. They were part of a wave of underground bands that contributed to the rich musical tapestry of the 1990s alternative scene.

The album is known for its mix of gritty guitar riffs, atmospheric soundscapes, and emotionally charged lyrics. It captures the essence of the 1990s alternative rock movement with a blend of introspective ballads and energetic rock tracks.

Whole Lava Love is a snapshot of a specific time in alternative rock when bands were pushing the boundaries of traditional rock music, experimenting with different sounds and lyrical themes. Lava Love, though not achieving widespread commercial success, garnered a dedicated following and contributed to the rich underground music scene of the 1990s.

Although Lava Love may not have gained the mainstream recognition of some of their contemporaries, ‘Whole Lava Love’ remains a cherished album for fans of the genre. It’s a hidden gem that captures the spirit of 1990s alternative rock, offering listeners a mix of raw emotion, creativity, and the DIY ethos that defined the era.

For those interested in exploring the deeper cuts of 90s alternative rock, Whole Lava Love is a worthwhile listen, offering a taste of the underground scene that fueled so much of the decade’s musical innovation.
