Let the Day Begin is the sixth studio album by the American rock band The Call, released in 1989. The album is named after and features the band’s most successful single, ‘Let the Day Begin.’
The Call, led by vocalist and guitarist Michael Been, was known for their passionate and anthemic rock sound. ‘Let the Day Begin’ is characterized by its powerful vocals, driving rhythms, and socially conscious lyrics. The title track became the band’s most commercially successful song, reaching notable positions on charts and earning recognition for its energetic and uplifting vibe.
After losing some commercial ground with 1987’s Into the Woods, the California quartet quickly regained it as the title track to The Call’s 1989 release became the band’s biggest crossover hit. With its insistent bassline and driving guitars, ‘Let the Day Begin’ was a rousing track that was a memorable introduction to the band’s fifth album. The album consists of some of The Call’s strongest material and the undercurrent of optimism and big arena rock hooks results in it being their best bid for wider success.
Unfortunately, nothing else clicked at radio like ‘Let the Day Begin.’ However, songs like keyboard-driven ‘Surrender,’ the vibrant ‘When,’ the blues stomp of ‘For Love’ (with Harry Dean Stanton adding harmonica), and the moody vibe of ‘Jealousy’ are just a few of the highlights of a consistently solid and enjoyable record.
While The Call didn’t achieve widespread mainstream success, they had a devoted fan base and received critical acclaim for their distinctive sound and socially relevant themes. ‘Let the Day Begin’ remains a significant album in their discography, capturing the spirit of the late ’80s rock scene.
Michael Been’s son, Robert Levon Been, later became a member of the band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC). Michael Been served as BRMC’s sound engineer and later passed away in 2010 while working as their sound engineer at a music festival in Belgium.
