Released in November 1974 on Island Records in the U.K. (and Atco Records in the U.S.), Country Life is the fourth studio album by Roxy Music, and one of the band’s most celebrated works. Following the departure of Brian Eno in 1973, some critics assumed Roxy Music might lose their avant-garde spark. Instead, with Country Life, Bryan Ferry and company delivered a record that brilliantly fused the band’s signature glam rock swagger with a more refined, textured, and ambitious approach. The title Country Life is famously ironic. While the music radiates urban sophistication and cosmopolitan flair, the album’s cover stirred controversy: it features two scantily clad models (Constanze Karoli and Eveline Grunwald, acquaintances of Ferry) posing suggestively against a backdrop of foliage. The provocative imagery led to bans and censored versions in some countries, but it also helped cement the band’s reputation for pushing boundaries in both music and style.

The closing tracks, “A Really Good Time” and “Prairie Rose,” strike a balance between wry humor and expansive energy. “Prairie Rose” in particular is a triumphant closer, celebrating Texas and serving as an unexpected homage to Ferry’s then-relationship with Texan socialite Jerry Hall (who would later appear on the cover of Siren).
Upon release, Country Life was both a critical and commercial triumph. It peaked at #3 on the U.K. Albums Chart and reached the Top 40 in the U.S. (their first album to do so). Critics hailed it as one of Roxy Music’s most cohesive and compelling records, blending glamour, sophistication, and edge in equal measure. Over the years, it has frequently been ranked among the greatest albums of the 1970s—appearing in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list.
Country Life is often considered the sweet spot of Roxy Music’s early-to-mid ’70s period, capturing the band at their peak of creativity before shifting toward the more polished and romantic sounds of Siren (1975) and their later ’80s work.
