Kacey Musgraves – Star-Crossed – Sea Foam Vinyl Record

Pressing marketed as Mystery Color #2 (of 3).

Released on September 10, 2021 through MCA Nashville and Interscope Records, Star-Crossed is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves. Following the Grammy-winning success of Golden Hour (2018), which catapulted her from critical darling to mainstream star, Musgraves returned with a project both deeply personal and conceptually ambitious. Written in the aftermath of her divorce from musician Ruston Kelly, Star-Crossed unfolds as a modern divorce album, tracing the arc of a relationship’s dissolution with candor, vulnerability, and cinematic scope.

Musgraves herself described the album as “a three-act tragedy,” drawing inspiration from classic Greek plays and Shakespearean drama. The 15 tracks are sequenced like a narrative journey, moving from love and disillusionment to heartbreak and ultimately, cautious rebirth. Musically, the album departs even further from traditional country, embracing dream-pop, folk, soft rock, electronic textures, and R&B flourishes—a lush, genre-blurring soundscape shaped by returning collaborators Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian, who also co-produced Golden Hour.

The album opens with the title track, “Star-Crossed,” a prologue of sorts. Its solemn acoustic guitar and layered harmonies set the tone, referencing the fated tragedy of Romeo and Juliet while preparing listeners for the emotional journey ahead.

Highlights across the album include:

“Good Wife” – a vulnerable ballad that lays bare Musgraves’ desire to meet expectations, laced with irony and sorrow.

“Cherry Blossom” – dreamy and ethereal, inspired by Musgraves’ time in Japan, symbolizing fleeting beauty.

“Simple Times” – wistful and nostalgic, yearning for the innocence of youth in contrast to adult complexities.

“Breadwinner” – sharp and biting, it flips gender roles and critiques fragile masculinity in relationships.

“Camera Roll” – one of the most emotionally devastating tracks, reflecting on the pain of revisiting old photos and memories.

“Justified” – a lead single that grapples with contradictions in healing, mixing pop polish with raw emotional honesty.

“There Is a Light” – the penultimate track, blending disco grooves with flutes and strings, symbolizing resilience and the emergence of hope.

“Gracias a la Vida” – a cover of Violeta Parra’s iconic Chilean folk song, closing the album with gratitude and reflection, signaling Musgraves’ acceptance and healing.

Throughout, Musgraves’ vocals are intimate, airy, and confessional, often floating above atmospheric arrangements. The production blends acoustic instruments with synths, vocoders, and layered effects, creating a sound that feels cinematic and modern while staying emotionally grounded.

Upon release, Star-Crossed debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 and topped the U.S. Top Country Albums chart, though it stirred debate in industry circles: the Recording Academy controversially deemed it ineligible for the “Country” category at the Grammys, pushing it into Pop instead. Critical reception was generally positive, though more mixed compared to the universal acclaim of Golden Hour. Reviewers praised its ambition, vulnerability, and sonic richness, while some felt it lacked the groundbreaking freshness of its predecessor.

Star-Crossed is important because it expands the concept of what a “country” artist can do. Much like Golden Hour blurred genre lines, Star-Crossed further positioned Musgraves as a crossover artist unafraid to push boundaries. It also situates her within the tradition of great breakup albums—alongside Joni Mitchell’s Blue, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, and Adele’s 21—while bringing a distinctly modern, pop-inflected perspective.

Star-Crossed may not have had the sunlit optimism of Golden Hour, but it stands as a bold, personal, and artful statement. It’s an album of heartbreak reframed as healing, tragedy reframed as transformation. By marrying country storytelling with cinematic pop production, Kacey Musgraves created a record that resonates both as a personal diary and as a universal meditation on love and loss.
