Sleep’s Holy Mountain, released in November 1992 by Earache Records, is the second studio album by American stoner/doom metal band Sleep, and is widely regarded as a foundational record in the stoner doom genre. With its colossal, fuzz-drenched riffs, Sabbath-worshiping guitar tone, and hypnotically slow grooves, the album helped crystallize the aesthetics of modern doom metal and became a cult classic among heavy music fans. It established Sleep as one of the most important bands in underground metal of the early 1990s and laid the groundwork for the heavier, more experimental directions they and others would later explore.
Drawing clear inspiration from Black Sabbath, particularly their early 1970s output, Sleep’s Holy Mountain is drenched in vintage tube amp distortion, down-tuned guitars, and hazy, psychedelic overtones. While later albums like Dopesmoker would push the band’s sound into even more epic and minimalist directions, Sleep’s Holy Mountain remains their most accessible and immediately gratifying release.
