The Art Of Noise – In The City Live In Tokyo 1986 – Double 180 Gram Vinyl Records

In the City: Live in Tokyo, 1986 (often issued under the title Noise in the City: Live in Tokyo, 1986) is a live album by British synth‑pop and experimental electronic pioneers The Art of Noise, documenting a rare full concert from their August 8, 1986 performance at Nihon Seinenkan in Tokyo, Japan. Although the concert was recorded more than three decades earlier, it was first released officially in 2021 after the original multitrack tapes—which had been broadcast on FM radio at the time—were discovered and newly mixed by band alumnus Gary Langan with liner notes by Ian Peel.

This live release captures The Art of Noise at a peak moment in their mid‑’80s touring life, showcasing their unique blend of synth‑pop, sample‑based experimentation, electronic textures, and performance art elements with an expanded live lineup that included Anne Dudley and J.J. Jeczalik (core members of the band), plus supporting musicians such as Dave Bronze on bass, Simon Moreton on percussion, Paul Robinson on drums, and vocalists known as The Noisettes.

The set list features live interpretations of some of their most iconic and influential pieces, including “Close (to the Edit)”, “Paranoimia”, “Eye of a Needle”, “Legs”, “Moments in Love”, and “Beatbox”, as well as energetic renditions of “Peter Gunn”, “Opus III”, and other crowd favorites. These tracks demonstrate how the band’s studio innovations—built on sampling, rhythm machines, and avant‑pop sensibilities—could be translated into a compelling live experience before audiences in Japan.

As a historical document, In the City: Live in Tokyo, 1986 offers fans a rare glimpse into The Art of Noise’s performance dynamics during the era of their In Visible Silence album and tour, highlighting both their musical creativity and their theatrical presence onstage.
