La Lupe – Is Back! is a studio album by Cuban singer La Lupe (born Guadalupe Victoria Yolí Raymond), released originally in the early 1960s and reissued in various formats over the years. This record marked one of her earliest solo LPs, showcasing her raw vocal power and emotional intensity at the beginning of her prolific career. It was released around 1961–1962 during her first period as a solo artist after breaking away from her trio Los Tropicuba, and before her landmark collaborations with Latin music giants such as Tito Puente.
On Is Back!, La Lupe delivers a vibrant mix of Latin popular styles—including bolero, tropical rhythms, and early boogaloo influences—applied with her uniquely expressive and dramatic singing style, which would soon earn her the nickname La Yiyiyi (“the earthquake” or “the hurricane” of Latin soul). The album’s tracklist typically runs about 30 minutes and includes a dozen songs such as “No Quiero Más,” “Canción De Orfeo,” “Collar,” “María Bonita,” and “Alma Llanera,” among others that blend heartfelt balladry with upbeat tropical rhythms.
Although not as internationally famous as her later work with Tito Puente or her celebrated boogaloo and soul recordings, Is Back! captures La Lupe early in her development as an interpreter of both classic and contemporary material—sometimes reimagining popular songs of the day in Spanish and infusing them with her intense emotional delivery and theatrical flair. Its title reflects that sense of return and reinvigoration as she stepped confidently into the spotlight as a solo artist.
