Jack White’s Boarding House Reach is his third solo studio album, released on March 23, 2018 via Third Man Records and Columbia Records. It marked a sharp stylistic departure from his earlier solo work, pushing further into experimental territory while still anchored by his distinctive guitar tone and blues-rock foundation.
The album was recorded in multiple locations, including Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles, and features an expanded group of collaborators. Rather than relying on a fixed touring band, White assembled a diverse lineup of musicians spanning rock, R&B, gospel, and hip-hop backgrounds. This broader approach is reflected in the album’s eclectic sound, which blends garage rock, funk, spoken word, electronic textures, and piano-driven compositions.
Boarding House Reach is fragmented and adventurous. Tracks such as “Connected by Love” and “Over and Over and Over” retain elements of White’s riff-driven rock identity, while songs like “Corporation” and “Ice Station Zebra” incorporate funk rhythms and rhythmic vocal phrasing that borders on rap delivery. The album also includes spoken interludes and more abstract pieces, reinforcing its experimental structure.
White described the project as intentionally unconventional, aiming to break away from traditional rock frameworks. The production features distorted bass lines, layered vocal effects, abrupt tempo shifts, and minimalist drum patterns. Piano plays a larger role here than on much of his earlier work, particularly on tracks like “Humoresque.”
Boarding House Reach debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming White’s third consecutive solo album to top the chart. Critically, it received generally positive reviews, with particular attention paid to its willingness to challenge expectations of what a Jack White record should sound like.
In his solo discography, the album represents his most experimental statement to date—less rooted in traditional blues revivalism and more focused on genre-blurring exploration. It stands as a deliberate reinvention, emphasizing unpredictability over accessibility.
