Disclosure’s Energy (released August 28, 2020) represents both a continuation and a reset for the UK electronic duo. After the global success of Settle (2013) and the pop-leaning collaborations on Caracal (2015), brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence stepped back from the spotlight for several years. Energy emerges from that pause with a renewed focus on club roots, global rhythms, and collaborative experimentation rather than chasing mainstream crossover hits.
At its core, the album re-centers Disclosure in house and UK dance traditions. The production leans heavily on tight drum programming, rubbery basslines, chopped vocal samples, and crisp percussion — recalling the stripped, rhythm-first approach that made Settle resonate in underground and festival circuits alike. However, Energy expands beyond straight UK house, pulling in Afrobeat, dancehall, hip-hop, and global electronic influences.
The guest list is extensive and stylistically diverse. Contributors include Common, Kelis, Mick Jenkins, Kehlani, Channel Tres, Fatoumata Diawara, Aminé, slowthai, Syd, and others. Rather than simply providing pop hooks, many collaborators shape the character of individual tracks. “My High” (with slowthai and Aminé) blends grime-adjacent aggression with club energy, while “Birthday” (with Kehlani and Syd) leans into smoother R&B textures. “Douha (Mali Mali)” stands out for its Afro-inspired groove, built around Diawara’s vocal performance.
The album’s title reflects its overarching theme: movement, momentum, and physicality. Even the more introspective or vocal-led tracks are anchored by groove. The sequencing favors rhythmic continuity over ballad breaks, reinforcing the idea that this is primarily a dance record.
Energy debuted in the Top 5 on the UK Albums Chart and performed solidly internationally. Critically, it was seen as a return to form after the more pop-driven direction of Caracal, reaffirming Disclosure’s credibility within electronic music circles.
In the duo’s discography, Energy functions as recalibration. It acknowledges their global success but pivots back toward club culture and rhythmic exploration. Rather than aiming for radio dominance, it emphasizes versatility and groove — a reminder that Disclosure’s foundation lies in the dance floor, even as their palette has grown more international.
