Senjutsu is the seventeenth studio album by Iron Maiden, released in 2021. Arriving six years after The Book of Souls, the album continues the band’s modern-era approach of expansive songwriting, progressive structures, and epic storytelling. The title comes from a Japanese term that can be translated roughly as “tactics” or “strategy,” and the album’s artwork and thematic imagery draw heavily from Japanese history and mythology, featuring the band’s mascot Eddie depicted as a samurai warrior.
Senjutsu leans strongly into Iron Maiden’s progressive side. Many of the songs stretch well beyond traditional radio length, often building slowly with layered guitar melodies, atmospheric intros, and extended instrumental passages. The band’s signature twin-guitar harmonies from Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers remain central to the sound, weaving melodic lines that gradually evolve throughout the songs. Bassist Steve Harris, who has long been the primary songwriter for the band, drives many of the compositions with his distinctive galloping bass style, while drummer Nicko McBrain anchors the music with powerful yet controlled rhythms.
