Stan Getz & Bill Evans documents a meeting that seemed inevitable but proved surprisingly brief. Recorded in 1964 with Getz on tenor saxophone and Evans on piano, the sessions paired two of jazz’s most recognizable lyrical voices with bassist Ron Carter or Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones. Verve held the tapes for years, finally issuing the album in the 1970s as Previously Unreleased Recordings.
The six selections on this LP emphasize standards and graceful originals rather than display pieces. “Night and Day” opens with a cool, spacious confidence, and “But Beautiful” lets Getz’s breathy tenor and Evans’s reflective voicings approach the melody from different angles. Neither musician crowds the other; the pleasure is in hearing how their phrasing overlaps, separates, and finds common ground.
Evans’s “Funkallero” adds a more oblique rhythmic shape, giving Elvin Jones room to sharpen the session’s edges. “My Heart Stood Still” stretches into the album’s longest conversation, while Earl Zindars’s “Melinda” and the closing “Grandfather’s Waltz” bring out the players’ shared attraction to bittersweet melody and unusual harmonic turns.
Because Getz was enjoying enormous success with bossa nova when these recordings were made, the shelved session became a fascinating alternate view of his mid-sixties work. Instead of Brazilian repertoire, it places him inside Evans’s harmonically detailed world. The rhythm section’s flexibility keeps the meeting from becoming overly delicate, giving the quieter passages real tension.
This 180-gram Vital Vinyl Series pressing uses the original six-track LP sequence. It is a distinct edition from later releases that expand the session with alternate takes, “Carpetbagger’s Theme,” or radio material, and it should not be confused with Round Flat’s differently barcoded 2024 Verve By Request pressing.
