All or Nothing at All comes from Billie Holiday’s final Verve period, when a weathered voice and impeccable rhythmic sense gave familiar standards a new gravity. Recorded across 1956 and 1957 sessions and issued in 1958, the album places Holiday with arrangements by Harry “Sweets” Edison and a circle of sympathetic jazz musicians.

“Do Nothin’ Till You Hear from Me,” “Cheek to Cheek,” and “Ill Wind” demonstrate how far Holiday could move a melody away from its expected shape without losing its meaning. Her tone is narrower than in the 1930s, but every hesitation, clipped consonant, and delayed entrance becomes expressive information.

The program alternates intimacy and swing. “Speak Low” and “I Wished on the Moon” carry a hushed tension, “But Not for Me” turns resignation into poise, and the title track becomes an uncompromising declaration. Edison’s muted trumpet often answers Holiday like a second singer.

“We’ll Be Together Again,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “April in Paris,” “Say It Isn’t So,” and “Love Is Here to Stay” complete an album rooted in the Great American Songbook but marked by Holiday’s personal history. The arrangements support her without trying to disguise the vulnerability of the late voice.
