100 Songs for a Centennial was assembled in 2017 to mark the hundredth anniversary of Ella Fitzgerald’s birth. The four-CD set draws from her Decca and Verve years, tracing a remarkable path from the Chick Webb era through songbook interpretations, small-group swing, orchestral ballads, blues, and live performance. It is broad without pretending to include every phase of her career.

Disc one follows the young Fitzgerald from “Sing Me a Swing Song” and “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” through wartime hits and celebrated duets. Her rhythmic buoyancy is already unmistakable, but the sequence also shows increasing control of ballads, diction, and character as she moves beyond the novelty songs that first made her famous.

The middle discs concentrate on the Verve years and the Great American Songbook. Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Gershwin, Berlin, Ellington, and other writers become material for a singer who could honor a melody while renewing its rhythm. “Lullaby of Birdland,” “Misty,” and “Summertime” demonstrate very different kinds of virtuosity.

Disc four widens the frame again, moving from “I Hear Music” and “Love Me or Leave Me” through blues, Beatles material, Ellington collaborations, and “Mack the Knife.” The selection emphasizes Fitzgerald’s adaptability: she could swing with a small group, float above strings, improvise with instrumental freedom, or clarify a lyric with apparent ease.

This official Verve four-CD edition contains exactly one hundred original recordings, twenty-five per disc. The complete disc-by-disc contents are included below so the set is represented as a full anthology rather than a short highlights collection.
