The Verve Vinyl Collection gathers Samara Joy’s first three releases for the label in a single three-LP box: the Grammy-winning Linger Awhile, the companion LP Linger Awhile Longer, and the seasonal EP A Joyful Holiday. Together they document a rapid period of growth from a remarkable young standards singer into a major contemporary jazz voice.
Linger Awhile is the foundation. Supported by Pasquale Grasso, Ben Paterson, David Wong, Kenny Washington, and horn guests, Joy approaches standards such as “Misty,” “’Round Midnight,” and “Someone to Watch Over Me” with a deep contralto, precise time, and phrasing that acknowledges earlier singers without becoming imitation.
Linger Awhile Longer collects seven alternate, duo, trio, and additional performances connected to those sessions. “I Miss You So,” “I’m Gonna Lock My Heart,” and “I’m Afraid” expand the repertoire, while new settings of “Guess Who I Saw Today,” “Sweet Pumpkin,” and “Can’t Get Out of This Mood” reveal how accompaniment can change a vocal interpretation.
A Joyful Holiday completes the box with six seasonal performances. Sullivan Fortner joins “Twinkle Twinkle Little Me,” Joy’s family appears on “O Holy Night,” and both studio and live versions of “The Christmas Song” frame an EP that connects vocal jazz, family gospel tradition, and the warmth of a working small group.
This direct-to-consumer box contains three separate vinyl records and twenty-three performances in total. It is not a single Linger Awhile pressing; the complete contents of all three included titles are listed below.
