MILOS – Sound of Silence – Vinyl Record
Sound of Silence places Montenegrin guitarist MILOŠ inside a repertoire that crosses popular song, film music, and contemporary classical writing. Released in 2019 after a period of recovery from injury, the album is both a return to performance and an argument that the classical guitar can carry modern melodies without reducing them to easy-listening decoration.
Paul Simon’s title song opens in an arrangement with 12 Ensemble, allowing the guitar’s soft attack to emerge against strings. Portishead’s “Sour Times” and Radiohead’s “Street Spirit” bring darker harmonic material, while Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat” gains an intimate, chamber-like gravity.
The program includes works and arrangements by Joby Talbot, Toru Takemitsu, Ólafur Arnalds, and others, moving naturally between recognizable songs and newly composed pieces. Saxophonist Jess Gillam appears on “Solitude,” and MILOŠ’s control of color—from near-whispered harmonics to rounded bass notes—holds the varied sources together.
“Sound of Silence,” “Sour Times,” and “Street Spirit” are not treated as vocal songs with the words removed. Their lines are redistributed across guitar, strings, and guest instruments, revealing inner voices and rhythmic details. Shorter pieces such as “Oremus” help shape the album as a continuous listening experience.
This standard black-vinyl edition presents the complete sixteen-track program issued by Decca Classics. The contents follow the physical album rather than a reduced sampler.
