You Finally Knew is Chad Lawson’s first album for Decca and a quietly focused collection of original piano music recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Released in 2020, it draws on Lawson’s classical touch and jazz awareness while aiming for direct emotional communication. The pieces are concise, melodic, and spacious, with every decay and pedal resonance treated as part of the composition.

“What Gorgeous Thing” and “Stay” establish the album’s unhurried scale. Lawson often lets a simple figure repeat while harmony changes around it, creating movement without density. “One Day You Finally Knew,” inspired by Mary Oliver’s poem, balances melancholy and resolve in a melody that seems to discover its direction as it unfolds.

“Waltz in B Minor,” “Ballade in A Minor,” and “Prelude in D Major” acknowledge the language of Romantic piano music without becoming historical pastiche. Their titles are traditional, but Lawson’s voicings, recording space, and use of silence place them firmly within contemporary neoclassical music.

“Across the Distance,” “Rain,” “She Dreams of Time,” “In the Waiting,” “I Wish I Were Close,” and “I Wrote You a Song” complete a sequence concerned with stillness, separation, and patient attention. The album’s calm is active rather than blank; small shifts in touch carry the drama.
