Private Music sounds unmistakably like Deftones while refusing to settle into a single version of the band. The album moves between enormous guitar weight, suspended shoegaze atmosphere, rhythmic tension, and the intimate menace of Chino Moreno’s voice. Stephen Carpenter’s riffs can feel architectural, occupying the full width of a track, yet the arrangements repeatedly create air around them. That contrast has long separated Deftones from straightforward alternative metal: heaviness is not only volume, and beauty is never entirely safe. Here the two qualities are treated as parts of the same emotional language.

“My Mind Is a Mountain” establishes the scale immediately, pairing a towering central image with music that rises and recedes rather than simply charging forward. “Locked Club” tightens the space, emphasizing repetition and confinement, while “Ecdysis” takes its title from the shedding of an outer layer. The word suits an album concerned with change that feels physical and difficult. Moreno’s lyrics remain suggestive rather than literal, using fragments of touch, distance, memory, and transformation to create a mood the listener enters before fully understanding.

“Infinite Source” and “Souvenir” reveal the record’s more luminous side without abandoning pressure. Abe Cunningham’s drumming gives the songs a flexible pulse, Sergio Vega’s successor Fred Sablan helps anchor the low end, and Frank Delgado’s textures widen the space behind the guitars. “CXZ” interrupts that flow with a more coded, abrasive presence before “I Think About You All the Time” turns toward obsessive tenderness. The sequence demonstrates how naturally Deftones can move from force to vulnerability without treating either mode as a separate genre exercise.

The final stretch contains some of the album’s strongest contrasts. “Milk of the Madonna” joins sacred imagery to bodily immediacy, “Cut Hands” is tense and percussive, and “Metal Dream” places the band’s own heaviness inside a more unreal frame. “Departing the Body” closes with an appropriate sense of release and dislocation. Producer Nick Raskulinecz, returning after Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan, helps preserve detail inside the density. Guitars remain massive, but vocals, electronics, and drums retain their own shape rather than collapsing into one wall of sound.
