Renewal presents Billy Strings as a songwriter and bandleader with a broad musical imagination, while keeping the physical excitement of acoustic string-band playing close at hand. Strings’ guitar has the speed and clarity that made his playing widely recognized, but the record gives equal attention to his voice and the emotional weight of the writing. Producer Jonathan Wilson worked with Strings and his road band, including Billy Failing on banjo, Jarrod Walker on mandolin and Royal Masat on bass. Their familiarity with one another is important to the result. Fast passages have a clear internal organization, with each instrument contributing a different kind of attack, while quieter songs allow the musicians to leave more space around the vocal. Additional colors broaden the arrangements, but the acoustic foundation remains easy to hear. “Know It All” and “Secrets” introduce the album with compact, strongly shaped songs, followed by “Love and Regret” and the more expansive “Heartbeat of America.” Those opening tracks establish how comfortably Strings can move between direct storytelling and an arrangement that gives instrumental development a larger role. “In the Morning Light” then offers a gentler focal point, placing the voice and melody at the center. “This Old World,” “Show Me the Door” and “Hellbender” continue the first record, demonstrating the range available within the band’s acoustic setting.
