John Coltrane – Essential John Coltrane – Target Exclusive Double Vinyl Record
Essential John Coltrane offers a focused two-record introduction to the saxophonist’s Impulse! years, when his music moved from lyrical quartet performances toward spiritual and structural breakthroughs. The selection favors complete statements rather than crowding the set with short excerpts.
“A Love Supreme, Pt. 1 – Acknowledgement” opens with the iconic four-note theme and vocal invocation. “Bessie’s Blues” and “Impressions” show the classic quartet’s rhythmic freedom, while “Crescent” reveals the patient, devotional intensity beneath Coltrane’s power.
The collection also includes two of his most celebrated collaborations. “In a Sentimental Mood” comes from the session with Duke Ellington, and “My One and Only Love” pairs Coltrane’s tenor with Johnny Hartman’s extraordinary baritone.
“Alabama” gives the set its most solemn performance, written in response to the 1963 Birmingham church bombing. The extended “My Favorite Things” closes on soprano saxophone, transforming a Broadway melody through modal improvisation and sustained quartet interplay.
This Target Exclusive Impulse! edition is pressed as a double-vinyl set. Its eight carefully chosen performances span balladry, blues, modal jazz, and spiritual expression.
